Practice Problem (one paragraph; no more than 250 words):
" name="description">
Peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) are typically provided to hospitalized patients upon admission in order to provide prescribed IV fluids and drugs. Patients who have a peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) inserted run the risk of developing phlebitis and bloodstream infections. Yasuda et al. (2021) report that phlebitis is the most frequent and significant PIVC-related complication, occurring in 7–44% of catheters. Other complications associated with PIVC include catheter-related blood stream infections (CRBSI), accidental removal, occlusion, thrombosis, and phlebitis collectively occurring in 20–50% of cases (Yasuda et al., 2021).
PICO(T) Question: Use the PICOT question developed in Topic 1 Discussion Question (DQ) 2 and refine it as needed.

Intervention | ||
In hospitalized patients (P), how does routine (every 72 hours) replacement of peripheral intravenous catheter (I) compared to replacement of peripheral intravenous catheter when it is clinically indicated (C) affect the incidence of phlebitis and blood stream infection (O)? | ||
Problem Statement | ||
It is not known if the implementation of routine (every 72 hours) replacement of peripheral intravenous catheter would impact the incidence of phlebitis and blood stream infection (O) among hospitalized patients (P). |
